Organizing Our IKEA Havsta Cabinets

I know this content is pretty specific to our household, but I wanted it all in one place in case it could also apply to cabinets in your home. We had three main goals for these IKEA Havsta cabinets (blog post linked here)… Hidden vacuum charging, coffee bar, and extra storage.

Coffee Bar

To make a functional coffee bar, you obviously need an outlet for the coffee machine. I used a 2 1/8″ hole saw to drill out the hole needed for the 2 ” desk power grommet (linked here) and pictured below.

The plug is much more noticeable in the photos, the coffee machine completely blocks it, in real life. The only outlet on the wall is in the bottom center cabinet, so I added more holes in the shelves and cabinet bases to wind the cord to the surge protector we plugged into that outlet. (pictured below)

Vacuum Charging Station

As odd as it is to admit, the vacuum charging station is the whole reason we did this IKEA hack in the first place. We don’t have any outlets in our closets, so these vacuums have been hanging out in corners for months. It’s also why we chose these specific cabinets, the 48″ height is huge. The Dyson omni-glide (on the left, linked here) fits perfectly inside even when fully assembled.

The docking/charging pieces came with the vacuums, but I got additional accessory storage on amazon. I love these accessory pieces (linked here) that are meant to clip right onto the docking station for all the vacuum heads.

Additional Storage

Before filling the other cabinets, we decided which type of storage would go in each. The other low cabinet is dedicated to the kids’ stuff.

The plastic containers are great for all kinds of board games (linked here). I also got these little card storage boxes to go inside (linked here). The covered white boxes are from IKEA, linked here. Full disclosure, I measured wrong and had originally thought that three would fit perfectly in a row. Hence the off-centered way they ended up.

The two other tall cabinets up top are dedicated to my DIY projects/tools.

There is additional IKEA skadis pieces to go with the pegboard, like these hooks. I grabbed a few things that were actually in stock, I didn’t need them to all be white.

The small cabinet above the coffee bar has the crock pots I rarely use and paper towels. I can’t reach anything in there, so Joe will always have the job of refilling paper towels when they run out.

The small cabinet below the coffee bar is for all the beverages that don’t fit in the fridge. There’s also the random paper tray, I’m not sure why I put that there. We’ll see if it stays.

It’s not Home Edit level, but it’s super functional and has been working so well for us so far!
